Siang, pukul 13.00 kemarin sore aku diundang makan siang oleh salah satu orang yang paling dekat denganku ditempat kerja, senangnya itu, yah kapan lagi bisa isi perut gratis, dirumah bos pula. Sebenarnya itu bukan kali pertama aku makan dirumah bosku, bisa dihitung setiap minggu jika lapar menyerang aku kerumahnya dengan alasan atau karena memang ada perlu, hehehe. tapi hari itu memang benar benar spesial karena aku diundang dan merasa diperhatikan, yup. Biasanya setelah makan aku langsung menuju ruang tamu, menunggu lima belas menit, dia kaluar dari dapur dengan gaya berlenggak lenggok, dan kita ngobrol, aku kenal dia sudah 3 tahun, dan aku tahu persis apa yang dia suka, yah bercerita, karena memang keahlianku adalah bercerita, dan suatu hal yang wajar karena memang dia seorang ibu- ibu. setelah bercerita biasanya beliau memberikan nasehat, nasehat berupa pelajaran seperti kejadian kemarin lalu, ketika helm ku hilang, dan hilangnya ada di teras rumah beliau juga, apes banget yah, jika orang tanya kenapa pakai helm baru lagi, aku bilang helm nya dipakai orang, gak tahu siapa yang pakai. semua orang tahu itu pasti maling, dan aku hanya lelah menyebut kata maling, yah maling lagi, ini sudah kali ke lima helm ku ada ditangan orang asing itu, orang asing yang tidak tahu sopan santun.

well, cerita berlanjut yah, aku masih dirumah bosku menceritakan kejadian itu, aku menyesal dan menyalahkan diriku sendiri, yah meskipun harga helm bekas hanya 100ribuan, tapi aku menyesal bukan karena uang, tapi aku gagal mempertahankan apa yang aku punya. aku berandai- andai jika suatu hari nanti aku juga gagal mempertahankan rumah tanggaku seperti aku gagal mempertahankan helm yang hilang itu, dan hatiku akan tambah remuk redam jika sampai berkali kali. Sontak tawa terbahak- bahak dan lebih nyaring bos ku, bukan malah memberikan nasehat, malah tidak berhenti tertawa, Yah, menurutnya aku terlalu berlebih- lebihan, alias lebbay tingkat tinggi. bagaimana tidak, aku bisa- bisanya berfikir sejauh itu, tapi teori probabilitas selalu ada. sejenak kami terdiam, lalu beliau mulai bicara, pelan-pelan dan aku mendengar secara saksama. " manusia itu tempatnya lupa, selalu ada titik dimana kita lalai, dan pada saat itu orang yang tidak bertanggung jawab memanfaatkan itu, sepintar-pintarnya kita, sehebat- hebatnya kita, tidak akan pernah jauh dari yang namanya kehilangan, walaupun berkali kali, termasuk kehilangan helm, maafkan dirimu dan berhati hatilah ".. Waduh sennang rasanya mendengar nasehat beliau. Terima Kasih.

Analysis Of " Two Kinds " By Amy Tan

"You want me to be something that I'm not!"

I sobbed. " I'll never be the kind of daughter you want me to be!"

"Only two kinds of daughters," she shouted in Chinese.

" Those who are obedient and those who follow their own mind!

Only one kind of daughter can live in this house. Obedient daughter!"

"Then I wish I weren't your daughter, I wish you weren't my mother,"

I shouted. (Two Kinds, 70)

This paper will explain a story of “ two kinds “ present by Amy Tan, in short story the main character is Jing Mei and Her mother.

Two kinds is a short story from book the Joy luck club by Amy Tan that first published in 1989. The short story tell the main character Jing Child's hood and the effect of his mother high hopes of her life. And some event that occure in authors life that first character a mother leave china and stay in america since 1949.

The reason why I choose the story for this final paper because there are some problems experienced by every person, especially among children and mothers. And in this story is very visible that is a tension between mother and daughter and american dream. I want to know what tension that happen if a mother forced her daughter to be full talented, and what happen if a daughter doesn’t wanted to hear her mother to make her be someone that she is not.

Jing mei is a chinese who live in america since her mother losing everything in china at 1949. Her mother wanted that Jing Mei should be prodigy (full talented). Jing mei's mother hope that her daughter will be great succes as prodigy until her mother try to mold her daughter into a child actress, but that doesn't work and finally her mother wanted jing mei to took a school piano. Jing mei doesn't not play a piano but her mother forced her to study hard until make Jing Mei feel not other way. Then Jing Jei follows what her mother say and she learns how to play a piano. Jing me learns piano by Mr. Chong on everyday, two hours a day from four until six.

A few week later, Jing Mei follows in talent show, she was to play ' pleading child ' and when she turns came. She is very confident and she started to play, at the beginning it was beautiful slowly and fast. Suddenly, there's surprise when she hit the first wrong note, then she hits another and another followed that. The audience just clapped weakly until her mother disappointed. Jing mei is shocked and doesn't want to play piano again, she is not genius and she regret it because her mother hope to make her as someone that she is not. Jing Mei frustrating because it was not the only disappointment he feels, next year, she fails many times in every her wish, she doesn’t become leader in class, she doesn’t get into college, dropped out in college until she thinks that she can’t be anything that she want. After a lot of year, Jing Mei and her mother don’t speak each other since thirty years until her mother gives Jing Mei Piano for Surprise in birthday thirty.           

       Jing Mei says that Only two kinds of daughters, they are loyal and they are following their own mind, it’s mean that the meaning of Two kinds who present by Amy Tan is it. Amy Tan as a author try to show two different sides between the child and the mother and two different wish, and we should not do it, because it’s will be effect to our self each other and it will make a conflict in a family.

            Jing Mei in this story is the character protagonist and her mother as antagonist  character. in the story Jing Mei trying to follow his mother's wishes to enter a beauty contest, then piano lessons to strive to be the best, but Finally Jing Mei realizes that it is actually not the intention and not her talent because she always failed in that regard.
her mother as antagonist character, he did not realize he was wicked and egoist because sometimes impose his own will and make Jing Mei to do what she wants.

I try to understand condition Jing Mei’s mother, in This story, her mother very Obsessed for anything, when her mother took her in Shirley temple or beauty training school, and when she is failed she try to took Jing Mei to School piano. It happen because

Condition in america at the moment was very stressed to be able to have a talent for many children who have talented like auntie lindo daughter that is waferli, she is very smart in playing chess and get many awards, until Jing Mei’s mother wanted same obsessed, beside that her mother very likes the Ed Sullivan Show (a popular variety show that appeared on america television since 1948). This condition then make her mother have obsessed althought her daughter famus like in TV.

Jing mei have poor physical condition because her mother wanted to be something that she doesn’t like it. It was proven when Jing Mei say:  

“ then I wish I’d never been born !, I wish I were dead! Like them ‘. (Amy Tan, 74)

According to experts psychology from england john bowlby (1989) say that the mother that is not able to provide a sense of security to children in early development will contribute to the negative things that finally will continue to be taken to effect the future of children and stimulate of emergence of depression to believe that the child commited left alone, could put and end to all of it and resolve the issue. And what John Bowbly says that it’s really happen to Jing Mei when her mother forced, when her mother took her to a school piano althought she can not play piano, when her mother forced her to study hard, when her mother always snap him.

            So, the conclusion about this story is the tension between them because her mother always follow what she wishes and wanted  what other people can. And it’s not good, because what we wish not necessarily we can do it and what other people can,  not necessarily we can do it. Everyone have a talented that different and we should try to find it. And if we have not find it, trying is the best way and never give up. Waiting is not good idea.
